Remodel of the Month: A Budget-Friendly Kitchen Designed to Grow

When this young couple came to us, they weren’t just looking for an updated kitchen - they were planning ahead. As a young couple in their first home, they needed something that would grow with them - more open, more functional, and better suited for everyday life as they start a family. The real challenge: sticking to a strict budget.

Bright modern kitchen with white Tribeca Cabinetry , stainless steel ZLINE appliances, and a large island with stools. Wooden table with plant decor.
Designed to grow with them, this kitchen balances function, style, and a budget that made sense.

Starting with What Mattered Most

For this kitchen, the design started with a clear decision - a gorgeous 48" range from ZLINE appliances - and a big window looking out into the back yard at the sink. Everything was built and prioritized around that.

Outdated kitchen with dark wood cabinets, laminate countertops, and a small peninsula creating a closed-in layout. White appliances, low ceiling lighting, and limited workspace make the room feel tight and dim.
Before: Outdated and closed in.

What Wasn’t Working Before

Besides the obviously outdated original cabinetry, the layout didn’t make the best use of the space, and the small peninsula cut off the room. Storage was minimal, empty soffits were taking up valuable space, and the kitchen didn’t leave room to move or entertain.

A Smarter Layout for Everyday Life

By opening up the space and reworking the layout, the way the kitchen functions created a central space for prep, seating, and gathering. Removing the wall immediately made the kitchen feel bigger and easier to move through. Tall cabinetry from Tribeca Cabinetry maximized storage, adding pantry space that aesthetically blended with the rest of the kitchen keeping the space clean and consistent. Everything is positioned to support the kitchen's day to day use.

A Budget That Works Smarter

To stay within budget, the homeowners took on their own flooring and some of the painting. That decision allowed more of the investment to go into the parts of the kitchen that make the long-term investment work - layout, cabinetry, and appliances.

We love working with DIYers who want to be involved. When done right, it’s one of the best ways to stretch a budget without sacrificing the end result. Bonus....the owners can proudly say that they made it happen!

Clean Design That Holds Up

The design keeps things simple and practical.

Bright, open kitchen with white cabinetry and a large dark gray island that adds contrast. Quartz countertops, brass hardware, and pendant lighting create a clean, modern look, while the expanded layout provides ample seating and workspace.
Light cabinetry keeps it bright, while the darker island adds contrast and anchors the space.

Light cabinetry keeps the space bright, while the darker island adds contrast and gives the room a strong center. Warm hardware pairs well with the ZLINE appliances, tying the whole space together without overcomplicating the look.

The finishes are clean, consistent, and built to last.

The End Result

What was once a tight, closed-off kitchen is now open, functional, and ready for real life. It's designed for everyday life, from quick mornings that tidy up fast in the mini-coffee bar to space suited to host family and friends. Because of the smart decisions made along the way, it all came together without going over budget.
